Jon R. Mower

Jon Mower is a trial specialist with over 50 jury verdicts to his credit. He has represented litigants in a wide variety of cases including individual and class actions involving discrimination and ADA claims, business and commercial disputes, products liability actions, employment matters, major personal injury cases, professional liability actions, and insurance claims.

In more than 35 years of trial practice Mr. Mower has developed a reputation as one of the premier civil trial lawyers in Southern California. He has litigated cases in both federal and state courts in California, Arizona, Florida and New York representing both plaintiffs and defendants, including class action cases and complex commercial disputes. Mr. Mower has obtained total verdicts of over $100 million and has also successfully defended through trial matters with collective claims of over $100 million. His experience on both sides of the civil litigation system has provided him with a unique and powerful insight into what it takes to prevail in the trial arena.

Jon has lectured widely in his area of trial strategy and technique including multiple programs with judges in Orange County where he has served as moderator on judicial panels regarding trial litigation and trial procedures and tactics. His present practice focuses on trial, and pre-trial strategy, in cases of major economic significance for both individual and corporate litigants.

PUBLICATIONS AND SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS

Mr. Mower has lectured widely in the areas of civil litigation and trial practice including presentations with the Orange County Bar Association, University of California Irvine, National Business Institute and multiple civic and educational organizations. He has served on multiple occasions as the moderator for the presentation “What Civil Court Judges Want You to Know” where he has moderated a panel of Orange County and Los Angeles County judges put on by the National Business Institute.

Mr. Mower is a frequent lecturer and panelist at continuing legal education programs involving trial and class action law. Presentation topics include “Litigation Strategy and Trial Presentation,” “Partnership and Business Ownership Disputes,” “Employment Law Essentials for the Small and Mid-Size Business,” “Mastering Cross-Examination at Trial,” “Recent Developments in Class Action Law,” and Effective Discovery in Business Litigation,” among others. He has spoken at a variety of legal and business education programs including the upcoming “Judicial Panel on Civil Litigation” in which he will act as Moderator.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Mr. Mower has been involved with youth sports including Junior All-American Football and Little League. He has also worked with fund raising with various charitable organizations including the Girl Scouts of America and the Orange County School of the Arts.

Representative Matters

  • Lead counsel in litigation involving disability discrimination claims of over 100 longshore workers at LA/Long Beach ports.
  • Company Dispute: Active litigation involving claims for over $5 million based on dispute over company control.
  • Product Liability: Represented motorcycle manufacturer in product design case involving catastrophic personal injuries.
  • Class Action/Non­Deficiency Laws: Major active class action litigation regarding claimed violations of non­deficiency laws following short sales of residential real property. Claims exceed $100 million.
  • Product Liability: Defended international glass manufacturing company in product liability action involving serious personal injuries.
  • Fraud/Misrepresentation: Lengthy (ten week) jury trial in Los Angeles Superior Court involving claims of fraud and misrepresentation. Asserted claims against my client were in excess of $7 million. Result: Defense Verdict.
  • Product Liability: Defended aircraft manufacturer in products liability claim involving alleged malfunction of hydraulic system resulting in quadriplegic injury.
  • Medical Malpractice: Medical malpractice action arising from death of a child. Jury trial in Orange County Superior Court. Result: Plaintiff Verdict $1.8 million.
  • Civil Rights Case: Claim for civil rights violations, wrongful arrest and police misconduct. Hired as outside counsel to represent Orange County Sherriff deputies named as defendants. Jury trial in Orange County Superior Court. Result: Defense Verdict.
  • Class Action/Wage & Hour:  Class action case arising out of alleged violations of federal and state wage and hour laws.  Result: Recovery of $12.5 million.
  • Real Estate Dispute: Investment fraud case involving Florida real estate ventures. Represented a group of California investors who had lost $3.5 million. Case litigated in federal district courts in Florida and New York. Result: Full recovery of all lost funds.
  • Class Action/Credit Claims: Class action claim on behalf of over automobile owners regarding repossession and credit claims. Result: Case resolved for over $12 million.
  • Medical Malpractice: Medical malpractice claim involving partial paralysis allegedly attendant to neurology treatments. Claim was in excess of $10 million. Jury trial in Riverside County Superior Court. Result: Defense Verdict.
  • Legal Malpractice: Complex legal malpractice case arising out of a high profile marital dissolution. Trial in Orange County Superior Court. Result: Defense Verdict.
  • Toxic Tort Case: Toxic tort case involving brain injury. Case proceeded to jury trial in Los Angeles Superior Court. Case was bifurcated on liability. Result: Jury found for Plaintiff and case was settled for a confidential amount following verdict.
  • Medical Negligence: Medical negligence and product liability claims involving bi­lateral blindness following retinal laser surgery.
  • Claims at trial were in excess of $12 million. Case was tried to a jury in Orange County Superior Court. Result: Defense Verdict.
  • Class Action/Wage & Hour Violations: Class action employment claims regarding federal and state wage and hour violations. Result: Class recovery of over $10 million.
